How to Tell if an Online Store Deserves Your Money

You found the thing you want at a store you've never heard of, at a price noticeably better than the big retailers. Now you're doing the mental math every online shopper does: is this a great find, or am I about to donate money to a stranger?

You can answer that question in about five minutes of checking. Most sketchy stores fail the same handful of tests, because running a trustworthy store takes work that scammers and corner-cutters won't do. Here's the checklist.

Read the Return Policy Like a Contract

The return policy is the most revealing page on any store, because it's where the store tells you, in writing, what happens when something goes wrong. Legitimate stores write clear policies; problem stores write vague or punishing ones.

What to look for:

  • A specific window. "30 days from delivery" is a policy. "Returns accepted in certain circumstances" is a trapdoor.
  • Who pays return shipping, stated plainly. Either answer can be fair; refusing to say is not.
  • Restocking fees. A modest fee on opened electronics is common. A steep fee on everything is a profit center built on your regret.
  • Refund method. Money back to your original payment is the standard. "Store credit only" on a store you've never used means a bad purchase becomes a hostage.
  • A real returns address. A store that won't tell you where returns go may not intend to receive any.
  • Defective-item handling. What happens if it arrives broken? If the policy doesn't distinguish "I changed my mind" from "you shipped me a broken one," assume the worst reading.

Five minutes here. If the policy is missing, contradictory between pages, or obviously copied from another site with the wrong store name still in it (this happens more than you'd think), close the tab.

Pay Through Something With Teeth

How you pay determines what you can do when things go wrong, and the payment options a store offers tell you something about the store.

  • Credit cards give you chargeback rights. If the item never arrives or isn't as described, you can dispute the charge through your card issuer. This is your strongest everyday protection.
  • PayPal and similar wallets add a dispute process and keep your card number away from the merchant entirely.
  • Debit cards have weaker protections in practice and a dispute drains your actual checking account while it's investigated. Avoid them for unfamiliar stores.
  • Wire transfers, peer-to-peer apps like Zelle or Venmo, gift cards, and crypto are the no-recourse tier. Money sent is money gone. Any store that pushes you toward these for a normal retail purchase, especially with a discount for doing so, is telling you exactly how this ends. There is no legitimate reason a retail store needs you to pay by gift card.

Also check for the basics: the checkout page must use HTTPS (the padlock), though note the padlock only means the connection is encrypted, not that the store is honest. Scam sites have padlocks too. It's a floor, not a seal of approval.

Think in Trust Scores, Not Verdicts

No single signal proves a store is safe or a scam. The honest way to evaluate an unfamiliar store is the way a fraud analyst would: stack up small signals and act on the total.

Positive weight: years of operation, a consistent review footprint across independent platforms, named staff or owners, a physical address that checks out on a map, active and specific customer-service responses, detailed product photos that aren't stock images, and policies written in coherent, specific language.

Negative weight: a brand-new domain, prices dramatically below everyone else on identical items, reviews that are all five stars and all written in the same week, no phone number or only a web form, a checkout that pushes irreversible payment methods, countdown timers on every product, and contact emails on free providers for a supposedly established business.

No single negative is fatal; new stores have to start somewhere. But signals compound. A new domain plus too-good prices plus gift-card payment isn't three small concerns, it's one large answer. This is the same logic behind shopping on platforms that score sellers for you: a marketplace with seller histories, review patterns, and dispute records visible does this signal-stacking on your behalf, and a vendor directory with verified storefronts gives you a track record where a standalone site gives you a homepage.

The Five-Minute Domain and Contact Check

Concrete steps, in order:

  1. Look up the domain age. Search "whois" plus the domain. A store claiming "trusted since 2015" on a domain registered eight weeks ago has already lied to you once.
  2. Search the store's name plus "scam" and plus "reviews." Read the one-star reviews specifically; patterns of "never shipped" or "fake tracking number" are conclusive. Ignore the star average, read the stories.
  3. Verify the physical address. Paste it into a map. An office building is fine; a residential house or an address that belongs to an unrelated business is not.
  4. Test the contact channels. Send a pre-sale question. A real store answers questions from people holding money. Silence before the sale guarantees silence after it.
  5. Reverse-search a product image. If the store's photos all trace back to other retailers' listings, you're looking at a dropshipping front at best and a phantom inventory at worst.
  6. Read the URL carefully. Character-swapped lookalikes of known brands (an extra letter, a hyphen, a strange ending) are built specifically to catch people moving fast.

None of this requires special tools. All of it together takes about five minutes, which is a reasonable tax on sending money to a stranger.

When a Deal Is Too Good

Price is the bait in nearly every online shopping scam, so calibrate your suspicion to the discount.

A store running 10 to 20 percent below the major retailers is plausibly just competing: lower overhead, clearance stock, a genuine promotion. A store offering this season's flagship phone or sneaker at half price is not competing. It's selling counterfeits, selling nothing, or harvesting payment details. For perspective, say a gadget sells everywhere for around $900 and one unknown store lists it at $450; ask what business model makes that possible, because "they're just nice" isn't one.

The too-good deal works because it creates urgency that crowds out the five-minute check. That's the tell: the more a price makes you want to skip verification, the more the verification matters. Real promotions survive a day of thinking; browsing curated deals, where listings are tied to accountable sellers, gets you the discount without the dice roll.

The Habit That Protects You

Vet once, in order: return policy, payment options, signal stack, domain and contacts, price sanity. Pay by credit card or a wallet with disputes. Screenshot the product page and confirmation, since pages have a way of changing after problems start. Spend five minutes before the purchase so you don't spend five weeks after it. The stores that deserve your money pass this checklist without breaking a sweat, and the ones that don't were never offering you a deal in the first place.
